24hr urine test for dummies
Hi All,
Having had my private Endo appointment yesterday, it wasn't as bad as expected and the Endo who is also an Endocrine Surgeon isn't ruling out HPTH at this stage! I have to do my first 24hr urine collection and I'm feeling very silly as it's confused the hell out of me

Hi Lucie
Don't ever feel silly about anything, we all had to do everything for the first time and I must admit my first '24' gave me the heebie jeebies thinking about it but when you get into a routine with it you'll be OK. What is it that's worrying you about it? Most of us have done at least one so glad to help - well, not literally

Sorry finger slipped! Do I pee in the orange bottles and then just pour each pee into the specimen container?

Thank you. I thought I just needed it to be simple as that but wondered why I had so much equipment. Also, does it need to be stored in the fridge?

Re: 24hr urine test for dummies
Lucie were you not given any instructions ? all our containers come with printed instructions.
There are different containers for various tests so if you are unsure then call the lab to make sure you have the right kit and also ask what to do.

No, mine was just an empty container with no granules or liquid, I wasn't told to wait for it to cool so just poured it in. Didn't put it in the fridge but my container just said to store it in a cool, dark place for the duration. I didn't have any separate written instructions Nelly, just what was written on the container. Good advice though to ring the lab for advice as we all seem to have been instructed slightly differently.

Re: 24hr urine test for dummies
I have only had empty containers and just stored in the bathroom. The instructions are fairly basic, mainly about the timing of the test, so first wee on day 1 not kept, from then on including first wee day 2 in container.
My first test showed high calcium, second one normal calcium and creatinine so not sure they are really much use.

Re: 24hr urine test for dummies
Hi Lucie,
The two containers are for different tests, some times they have some liquid- acid in them, this is just to preserve the urine.
from memory uric acid is separate test in 1 container to calcium/ cret clearance.
are they alo going to do some bloods ?
best wishes

Hi Lozza
Yes I am having blood tests on Tues when I take the urine collection back. Have you had to do the collection before?

Hi Lucie
That's an interesting twist on the disappearing post problem !
Was there anything unusual, for example, did you start to type the post then have a break before finishing it?
Could you see all of your post on the screen when you clicked "send" ?
I have created an experimental topic so that we can try to replicate and identify the problem.
https://hyperparathyroid.forumotion.co.uk/t150-temporary-experimental-topic-for-testing-the-disappearing-reply-syndrome
It seems that the problem could be caused by either or both of a combination of a long post and two replies at the same time.
It may also make a difference if we click "preview" then "send", as opposed to "send".

Re: 24hr urine test for dummies
Yes, I was quite surprised by how much pee I had done ! I was passing a lot of phosphorus and calcium/ cret helped to rule out FHH.
The stuff is really heavy, I would def keep away from light, mine came in a brown bag.
regards

just a thought. I will ask around as to what might be the problem.

Thanks Lozza
I do not believe that it is a browser issue.
It's happened to me only once, using Firefox on Windows 7.
Yesterday, it seems that simultaneous replies resulted in the loss of one of the replies, but I suspect that there is another factor - either length of the reply, or time between starting and sending the reply.

Re: 24hr urine test for dummies
Oh, yes, the old 24-hour urine test! My favorite! I peed so much, I had to run back over to the hospital in the middle of the night to get another bottle because I realized all of my urine was not going to fit in 1 stupid bottle!!! The second time I did the test, I requested 2 bottles to start! What a pain!!
Good luck, Lucie!

Boy you pee'd loads Audrey. Sounds like when I used to ride horses they pee for ever.
Not that I'm saying you look like a horse, from the picture you posted of your scar you look fab.
P.S my kids tell me off when I say fab so I say it all the time to annoy them, it's coz I'm soooooo old

Re: 24hr urine test for dummies
Amanda, you have to annoy and embarrass your kids, it's the law! My 16 year old loves it (NOT.....!) when I reply to him using words like cool, sick, dope etc then launch into a chorus of "don't ya wish your girlfriend was hot like me ..." complete with Pussycat Doll style dancing! It makes my day, especially if he's got friends round (I don't do it in front of them though, I'm not that cruel ....) it renders him quite bilious looking

Re: 24hr urine test for dummies
Hahah you sound just like me I've done that routine many a time love love love it when my 20 yr old daughter say for god sake mother grow up !!!! Mind you she doesn't say that when she's raiding my wardrobe and wearing things I haven't even taken the labels out of yet.!!!!
My son is now 25 and I think he's just beginning to see the funny side. 16 yr old boys though are sooooo easy to embarrass but you mustn't do it in front of his friends who knows what could appear on you tube, I'm sure F Polazzo would be intrigued !!!!
