Sestamibi scan
Hi folks, I'm a newcomer on here. Waiting to be diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism. The docs have suspected I "may" have it since last sept and I've been to see an endocrinologist who thinks because of my age (35) it would seem unlikely!
All my blood tests have come back with high calcium and now I've had 2 pth tests come back high as well. Oh and 2 tests of very low vitamin d levels. Not to mention all the symptoms I've been having that when I read dr Normans site and this fantastic forum I just know that's what I've got. Doc gave me vitamin d supplements but they made me very ill
Finally I've got an appointment through for an ultrasound and a sestamibi and was wondering if anyone can tell me if its safe for me to go home to my 2 year old afterwards. (I'm a single mum). Obviously I'll call the helpline when I can in the morning but just fretting a wee bit about childcare when there might not need to be. Thanks.

Re: Sestamibi scan
Hi Tea Jenny,
I am sorry but I do not know the definitive answer to sestamibi scans but I am sure others who have had it done will be along shortly. I think that giving them a ring would clarify it for you. As far as I am aware it is a very low dose of radiation and as long as you are not pregnant or breastfeeding, you should be fine, but again I would ring just to be safe. I just wanted to say hello and welcome, and as far as I know spring chickens can get HPT. It must be really hard to cope with a little one as well as this on top, I hope they get you sorted sooner rather than later.

Thanks Sue. Nice to be called a spring chicken! Even if this disease does make me feel ancient! x

Re: Sestamibi scan
Hi tea jenny and welcome
I am waiting for a new mibi scan appt, had to cancel the last one, i do have the info leaflet so will go and see what it says, hang on a mo,
Ok it says
" We ask that you avoid prolonged close contact with children or pregnant women for the rest of the day following your nuclear scan. Close contact means not sitting with children on your knee or next to someone who may be pregnant. If you have sole care of a small child it may be advisable to ask someone to help you on the day of your scan. If this is difficult please ring the department for advice "
Do you have someone who can help you out ?

Re: Sestamibi scan
Hi Tea Jenny and welcome!
Yes, I got the exact same leaflet as Nelly - well, with the same wording at least. I was just about to check mine for you but Nelly beat me to it!
Yes, this IS a fantastic forum! You will always get someone come along to offer help and advice, and it's somewhere for you to just vent or have a rant if you need to - you're amongst people who understand!
Hope all goes well, keep us posted. It's nice to have a spring chicken amongst all the mother hens - and a couple of daddy roosters as well I believe!

Re: Sestamibi scan
I phoned and spoke to a physicist! And they said it is best and safest practice to avoid prolonged contact with a child following 24 hrs of the scan. So that means I can care for him, just not sit him on my knee and cuddle him etc. my mum is coming with me to help care for him and look after him while I'm getting the scans. (I live far away from my hospital and will need to stay nearby overnight).
