PPI's and reduced urine calcium output

Hi All I have just read this article www.medscape.com/viewarticle/804146_2 concerning the use of PPI's for acid reflux. See item no. 17.
It states that use of these drugs reduces the amount of urine calcium output. Very interesting as I am currently taking 20 mg of Esomeprasole every day, it's the only thing that controls reflux for me.
It maybe an article I need to draw attention to at a later date.
Does anyone else take PPI's ?

Seeing as I am semi perched on the FHH chair as well, I've tried to find out as many facts that can affect urine calciums and had read  that PPI's could contribute to a low urine calcium.  I was prescribed Pantaprozole in Jan as the panic/reflux was just beginning to rear its head, I only took them for a month as like before they seem to dry my stomach up too much and make it burn.  I am much better taking Gaviscon advance at night qnd elevating the head of the bed.  However that was also when I did my 24 hr collection.  I had just started a 2 week loading course of estrogen pessaries too and again I have since found out that can cause a low urine calcium.  Thirdly I was having some IBS type symptoms/gallbladder problems ( all new to me) which caused some light motions and again I have read that steatorrhea can cause a low urine calcium.  I am not a huge calcium eater either, mainly because I must look at a cake and my weight rockets, joys of being hypothyroid too.  I would dearly love to do another 24 hr collection as Mr P suggested, but my endo here says it is not necessary as I am just above the cut off for FHH.  Mr P did say that a low calcium diet would not affect the urine calcium but I have read otherwise.  Also  I try and cut out salt as much as possible and have read that a high salt intake can raise urine calcium but this is hard on the kidneys as well.
How are your headaches at the moment??  I hope they have disappeared and leaving you alone for a time.

Unfortunately I've been on PPI's for a while (not good) and am possibly looking at an op to correct stomach valve but I've put that on the back burner ATM as it's a big decision and I don't want the origami type Nissan fundoplication nearly all gastros offer (too many side effects) you can't eat solid food for up to 3 mths after and as I'm on the slim side I would disappear not a good look at 51.
I've had gallbladder out, that's when all my reflux symptoms started !!!!
I don't have a high calcium or salt diet so I don't know whether that affects it.
My headaches have just about gone ATM I get the odd hour of it but nowhere near as bad thank goodness, it was awful I was at the end of my tether with that and other stuff going on.
Thank you for thinking of me and hopefully we will get past the FHH crap and get our PTH confirmed like Tigerlily. Then on the road to a cure.
Did you say your Daughter got married ? I bet that was a wonderful emotional day, I can't imagine what I'll be like when my Son or Daughter get married I'll be a weepy mess

I just finished a PPI 14 day treatment and it does help. That is very helpful info on the cal urine. I will be sure not to take any the month I have to do the 24 hour test. My urine cal is mid range. Mr P IMO is wrong on the low cal diet it will effect the 24 hour urine test but will not effect the serum cal test.

Hmmm..........I took PPIs for months before my surgery, and my urine calcium when checked both times was normal. Wish I would have known this then. Although, nothing else would control my reflux, so I don't know how I would have stopped taking it. I have tried everything else, and nothing seems to help. Gaviscon did nothing for me. Tums don't help. I am now taking prescription Pepcid, and that is not doing the trick either. I am going to ask about increasing the dosage. I had a scope done a couple of years ago, and I did have some irritation in my stomach, so I know I need something.
I hate taking ANYTHING, but I don't want esophageal or stomach cancer either!

I'm in the same position as you, PPI's are the only thing that control my reflux and unfortunately I've been on them long term.
As you say I don't want stomach or esophageal cancer either and I've recently had endoscope and I'm all clear of that, just the pesky valve not working correctly.
