Alendronic Acid

Hi 

Does anyone take Alendronic Acid 70mg per week? I`ve been prescribed these by the Endo but not started taking them yet as wanting for my GP to write a prescription.  

I`ve always been very healthy until the end of last year, so its a shock to the system and a learning curve getting use to all these appointments, drugs, different consultant, different hospital departments which I didn't know existed and I`m sitting here typing with a 24 hour ECG monitor attached.    

Hope the sunshine is helping with the bone pains for everyone on here!

Hi Mel,

I have no experience of taking Alendronic Acid but my understanding is that it's just another name for Fosamax which is to treat osteoporosis. 

If you do have pHPT it will not help your osteoporosis since over time your raised PHT levels will continue to weaken your bones. This can only be corrected by treating the cause (parathyroid) rather than the symptoms (bone loss).

I'm not a doctor, but since joining the pHPT rollercoaster ride, I have little faith in our consultants knowledge of this area of medicine either so I'd definitely recommend reading up on fosamax and asking a lot of questions regarding your other symptoms before you decide.

Hope your ECG helps you get closer to a clear diagnosis.

Mel are you taking it because you have full blown osteoporosis? 

Looking at the patient info on A acid it could have some unpleasant side effects so I guess you have to decide if you really need it and want to try it and as Dee says if the cause isn't sorted will it do anything for you.

I think you do need to read up on it and talk to your GP as well.

Just read your other post Mel. I also have osteopenia in my spine but was told they wouldn't treat it with anything while i still have hpth.

Hi thanks for all your replies.

I think the endo has prescribed it because of the osteopenia ans I take Prednisolone for ulcerative colitis, which can thin your bones.

I can't help you with this, Mel. I never had osteopenia. Sorry to hear about the colitis too. That is no picnic! Oh, why do we all have to have so darned many problems?!!
