What the heck is a gut hormone?
Got home tonight to find 2 blood request forms and a letter from my consultant to say that my fasting gut hormones are slightly raised so I need to have a repeat test and he's going to redo vit D, calcium and PTH at the same time. The last 3 I'm happy with as I've now been on Vit D supplements for 3 weeks and although I feel much sharper mentally, I ache like hell. Only thing is I have Googled lots and can't really find anything out, it all seems very vague. I initially had low cortisol which is why they did this and a short Syncathen Test (no idea about that) but why had it taken so long to get back to me, that was weeks ago (just checked, was 1st of May, surely it doesn't take that long to get bloods back?!It can't be that low then if they're happy to leave it so long.
If anyone had a clue (or wild guess!) any ideas appreciated. :-)

Re: What the heck is a gut hormone?
Hi Meggy
My power of recall isn't so good these days but to the best of my memory I have a feeling that fasting gut hormone is a test they do to check for MEN1 when endocrine adenoma/s is suspected and you may fit the profile. I could be wrong so please chip in folks .....

Re: What the heck is a gut hormone?
Thanks Jasmine, that helps, I've had a look but I can't tell if that fits me. My PTH is very high, vit D very low & calcium high end of normal range. A blood test showed up that I had *low* cortisol so they did all these other bloods. I don't think the low cortisol fits in with MEN1 although I'm really struggling to make sense of all the stuff out there.

Re: What the heck is a gut hormone?
Meggy I did have a gut hormone test done before my op but it all came back fine and I can't remember what it was for. I did ask when it was requested but I'm afraid the answer has been lost in the mist of time.

I hope this gets ruled out for you Meggy, but there is some useful info at the above site.

Re: What the heck is a gut hormone?
Bloody hell!
I mean, thank you Tigerlily:-)
Can't be that hopefully because I'm sure I'd feel much worse than I do. Does worry me a little tho because I have 3 hard lumps on my legs and arm which look just like collagenomas which are supposed to be an indicator.
Oh well, can't do anything yet so will have to stop looking on Google!

No hopefully not! But knowledge is power - even though you gain it just to rule stuff out!
High PTH and high normal calcium usually indicates hyperparathyroidism.
Low cortisol could be connected with the adrenal glands.
Keep us posted on how things move along, Meggy, and let's hope it get sorted soon.

I'd like to say we're a bit more progressive in Cambridgeshire but unfortunately Addenbrookes is in Cambs and Peterborough doesn't even have a half decent endocrinology service in spite of it's swanky new hospital which everyone hates!
