IBS Symptoms maybe?
Evening All,
Does anyone suffer IBS symptoms? I know this is a big factor of HPTH. For about a year now I've had a tender upper abdomen, I don't get tummy pain but just constantly feels bloated. I bloat after all food and my tummy just seems to turn into a football. Had an iffy tummy since yesterday but I put that down to shovelling my breakfast in followed by a coffee. Without being too crude, I have a lot of wind that smells very very unpleasant I managed to get hold of a Headache and Tummy upset sachet yesterday which really helped, similar to Alker Selzer but I felt like I pulled a muscle in my right lower back whilst I was having the tummy discomfort, when I read up on IBS it said sometimes back pain accompanies this. I'm assuming because the sachet helped to relieve the symptoms, it could be IBS like relating to HPTH maybe?
Thanks
Lucie

Hi Lucie
It sounds like a classic case of IBS. Apparently the bowel comes down on the lower right side and often gives pain in that area. That's what my GP told me.

When I have IBS it's excruciating: almost similar to labour pains. It's not fun at all It can be helped by prescription medicine though.
Hope it's better today Lucie.

Re: IBS Symptoms maybe?
I have it the same Brigitte and I agree, it's excruciating! I've sussed out the pattern of the episodes over the past couple of years - it starts day one with a bloated feeling in my lower abdomen and things start to slow down, if you know what I mean, and I start to get some vague lower abdominal pain. The pain from the spasms builds gradually over the next couple of days until by day three I'm consumed by it, can't go out or do anything really, just lay down try and sleep, dose myself up with pain meds and use heat on my belly, then over the next couple of days it starts to ease off. When I get an episode coming on I know I can write off the next five days to a greater extent. It's miserable......! I was getting five day episodes every two weeks at one stage, but with careful management and avoiding the triggers that I know of, I don't get such frequent episodes now, thank goodness. I am starting to get more episodes of gastric reflux now though, so it's shifted north ..... can't win!

Re: IBS Symptoms maybe?
May IBS experience is similar but not quite as painful as yours and seems to be lower right pain as well as central, it's a horrible condition and when I have a bad session of reflux it always travels down and starts IBS which I can then have on and off for 3 + weeks.
I know that strong cheese (unfortunately I love cheese) cream, anything greasy, pastry all set it off.

Re: IBS Symptoms maybe?
Ah yes, IBS. I know it well. Best thing you can do for that is get your darned parathyroid tumor or tumors removed from your neck, but since doctors stall around keep that cure from us for so long, we continue to suffer. I have been struggling with IBS for over 30 years. As I neared my parathyroid surgery, the symptoms grew worse and worse. I stopped attending church because my intestines refused to stop churning and gurgling. For the last year or so before surgery, there was constant loud noises coming from my intestines. It was very embarrassing, not to mention VERY uncomfortable! This was the very first symptom to resolve for me after surgery. I was very surprised to notice my intestines were quiet and relaxed the day after surgery. Several years ago, my doctors prescribed some medications to help with the symptoms of IBS. They didn't seem to work, so I just continued to suffer. My pain would seem to increase as the day went on. There were many times I would cancel plans and just sit at home because I was so miserable. I am VERY grateful that this symptom has resolved! It was really wrecking my life! I wish I had some good remedies for the problem. Unfortunately, I don't, as nothing seemed to help me. I will just pray that you all will soon have parathyroid surgery!!

Re: IBS Symptoms maybe?
Hi Lucie
I don't suffer greatly from IBS as such, just from bloating and wind, so I decided to try and cut out cow's milk recently to see if I'd developed lactose intolerance. I drink Rice Milk now in tea/coffee and it does seem to have helped. I don't feel that there's a load of fermentation going on my gut now so much.
I cut this out of a magazine a few weeks back:
Lactose intolerance occurs when you stop making the lactase that's needed to break down milk sugar (lactose). As we get older many people stop producing it in large amounts. In the UK, up to 15% of the population is lactose intolerant as a result. When milk sugar is not broken down and absorbed in the upper intestines, it passes through to the large bowel. Here, fermentation causes gas, bloating, pain and diarrhoea. In fact, many people who think they have irritable bowel syndrome actually have lactose intolerance. The only effective treatment is to avoid products containing lactose.
I just offer it here for what it's worth, and hope you're not feeling too bad now.

That's interesting Tigerlily. Rice milk really does settle your stomach, I've found. I make sure I use the no added calcium version - can't think why

Ive never tried rice milk, I stood in the supermarket the other day looking at rice, almond and soya milk trying to decide what to get that would taste ok in tea and coffee.

Re: IBS Symptoms maybe?
Give the rice milk a try, Amanda, if you like a sweet, creamy tea/coffee (well spotted about the no-added-calcium variety, Lucie!) but if you don't like it too sweet and creamy then the almond milk might be better. I haven't tried the soy milk myself, having read that too much soy can affect the thyroid in some cases.
It's probably worth trying for the price of a carton if you can get some relief from it, as I seem to have done.
More palatable than the potato water, too, I should think!

Re: IBS Symptoms maybe?
Ooo non-dairy milk, one of my specialist subjects!
Of course, taste is a personal thing but I'd recommend a nutty milk for coffee - almond, hazelnut or, if you're feeling particularly flush, spelt milk (yum yum).
Tea is a little more difficult. Most non-dairy milks are quite watery so if you're after the creamy taste of milk you may struggle. Almond milk in general is a good all rounder and inoffensive. Soya milk can also work though it has a stronger taste.
On cereal, coconut milk is also nice. I like rice milk too but it also has a unique taste which some might not like. Oat milk is very comforting I think.
Oat milk also makes a good base for homemade yoghurt as you need something with some sugars in.
I have tried hemp milk. Nothing wrong with it but nothing special either. I agree with Tigerlily, almond or rice milk are a good first dip into the milky non-dairy world - me and soya don't get along (hormone-wise rather than digestion-wise)
Best thing about all of the above is you can stock up on UHT versions when they are on offer and the dates are generally 6-8mths ahead so you never run out.
Perhaps we can run some sort of taste poll so we can get the Ritz to stock up accordingly.

It's only a matter of time before the health food industry introduces potato milk, then we'll be sorted!
I'll keep my eyes peeled on the special diet/kosher/Polish aisle in Sainsbury's.

Re: IBS Symptoms maybe?
Lucie,
It sounds like a classic gluten/celiac problem.
It's a long story but 22 years ago two different people I worked with at 2 different places, physicians, thought I was pregnant.
After going on the strict gluten free diet, the abdominal distention went away.
So many with gluten problems seem to end up with HPth too.
I can't tell you how serious gluten can be. I could talk about what can happen to the nervous system and bones and how dangerous it is for the spleen but I don't want to seem to go overboard.

Is a great resource. There are a number of wonderful people on there from all over the world and a person can get an understanding of what many have gone through.

Re: IBS Symptoms maybe?
Eyes peeled, I see what you did there!
I can cope with rice milk in cereal and even in cocoa but it's not great in tea. I could only find rice milk without added calcium and I've cut out milk and cheese at present due to brain overload. I do actually feel a lot better and I prefer to be able to think a bit more clearly. I have come to recognise when my calcium levels are up, since I had the overload courtesy of my idiot GP.
I like the almond milk in tea and coffee, but it always seems to have added calcium. All these dairy free milks are easy on the stomach though and definitely helpful when you have troubles such as IBS.

I'll pass that potato milk suggestion on to my Polish friend, in case they've thought of it already!!
Thanks for the informative post on non-dairy, Dee, very interesting. I'll look out for oat milk and give that a try. Sounds nice and comforting for the winter.

I was tested for Celiac (sorry if spelt wrong) on a blood test but it came back fine but I did think to myself today I'm going to try going Gluten Free for a while and see if this helps.

Re: IBS Symptoms maybe?
Finding non-dairy milk without added calcium is difficult, but it's worth bearing in mind that the kinds of calcium (and vit D) they add aren't as absorbable as those naturally occuring in milk so if you swap real milk for a replacement you're likely to have still reduced your overall intake, so I wouldn't be too scared about experimenting and finding what works best for you.
Lucie, have you thought about probiotics? There's a lot of marketing nonsense surrounding them but they are good at improving digestion for certain people. I find cheapo natural yoghurt helps me reduce nasty smells (tmi? Sorry.) If you are concerned about calcium though you could try sauerkraut instead. Another gem in the Polish diet it contains lots of gut friendly bacteria and nice as a relish.
Having said you probably don't want to make too many changes at the same time so if you're going gluten free for a bit it may be worth waiting until you can assess the effects of that before you try other ideas.
Hope you find some relief.

Re: IBS Symptoms maybe?
Hi
Having spent some time reading up on Gluten Free food, I'm still confused.
Personally, I don't think I eat too much Gluten anyway. I've always cooked fresh food, always use fresh meat for dinner, I may use sauces in the week, I know bread is a no no but I do eat bread, I eat a lot of salad and vegetables and as a family we so not eat anything that's processed or frozen.
Am I wrong in saying I don't eat much Gluten or surprisingly, am I eating more than I think? I do enjoy a Flat White coffee and a cuppa but recently started hot water with a lemon slice.
If anyone can give me Gluten Free for Dummies that would be fab
Thanks
Lucie
