Any questions I should be asking the surgeon on Monday? Empty Any questions I should be asking the surgeon on Monday?

Post by Brigitte0 Thu Aug 28, 2014 9:23 pm

Hello All

My long awaited appointment with the surgeon is on Monday. My brain is very slow and soggy recently and I've lost the list of questions I had so I need to get myself together and either find it or write a new list. Some questions are obvious and some have even been answered already but since I can't seem to think properly, it would be useful if you could help me out please. All I can think of myself at the moment is to ask him WHEN can you slit my throat and chop out my adenoma please?!!

During the deep watches of the night when I'm spending a lot of time awake when I'd rather be asleep so I can't hear Mr O snoring his head off Twisted Evil I start thinking of scenarios where Mr Surgeon says, 'No, I'm not wasting my time with you, there's nothing wrong'. When seriously this is not going to happen because it's been proved in several different ways that there is a rotten adenoma that requires removal.

Love, hugs (and I'll try and keep the over-anxiety to myself Rolling Eyes )

How long he expects it to take before your blood levels normalise, how often will your blood be tested afterwards, how long you need off work. I'm sure there's other stuff but like you I've got a foggy brain AND I've had a beer!

Hi Brigitte
Do you know if he will be visualising all 4 or just the one. If it's one I'd ask him what happens if there is more than one in there. What symptoms he thinks will improve immediately and when to expect improvements. Will he test blood levels before you leave hospital. What levels should your calcium & PTH go down to. Does he recommend you take any supplements after.
I can't think of any more ATM but will post again tomorrow.
I can't believe it's actually happening for you, good luck and lots of love & GBH. Amanda xxxx

Hi Brigitte,
My first question would be how soon can you have your surgery??  Will he check all four parathyroids?  How long to expect to be in hospital.
Any do's and don'ts
What to expect after surgery etc
Good luck for Monday!!!
Hugs to you,

At last your appointment is imminent Brigitte! Good points from Meggy; additional questions for me would be:

How many PT surgeries does he do a month and how many has he done in total.
Will he be doing focused surgery or looking at all four glands, and if not why not.
Does he do intraoperative PTH testing to check if PTH has dropped following excision of the adenoma.
What is his success rate, and what are the risks in respect of his previous surgeries in terms of incurring damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve
Does he prescribe post op calcium routinely or only if needed.
How long will the surgery take.
Will it be a day case or require an overnight stay.

Trying to remember other questions I asked, will post them separately if I think of anything more. I expect others will say the same so apologies for any duplications.

Thanks Ladies, all such a help  Smile

I know that he's going to look at all glands because I asked the Endo last time and he said it was policy to check all 4 and remove any diseased parathyroid. I also know it's an overnight stay at the least.

Hi Brigette,

Good luck on Monday and i think everyone above has pretty much covered every thing and its perfectly normal to feel anxious.

I usually to a kind of mind map, imagine a spiders body, put your name in the middle and say for eg operation as well to remind you.
Each point or question you want to ask draw a line from the circle and write a specific question, each in different coloured ink, as this will make your questions more visual, you can number them in order of importance if you want.
This can all be on one piece of paper, i find this helps me.

Take care

I think you've all pretty much covered everything here. I can't think of anything to add.

So very happy to hear your appointment is nearing, Brigitte! YAY!!! cheers Wow, it seems we have quite a bit to celebrate here lately! There are a few more celebrations I've been looking forward to for a long time, and I do hope it won't be long now until we can raise a glass for these as well! I'm praying this time is very close now too!

Good Luck, Brigitte!
