Addenbrookes' Endo Appointment

Post by Tigerlily on Thu Aug 28, 2014 6:40 pm

Thanks, Everyone, for your good wishes for this appointment - I have to report it did not go as expected.

It was a routine appointment to get results of DEXA (-2.0 at left hip) and US, which we already knew had shown up the 17x6x4mm enlarged PTH gland.

I wanted to be assured that Dr W really understood the Ca/PTH/Vit D connection and the imbalance in these that is the hallmark of primary PTH, but she still doesn't seem to have got the message. There was no apology or even acknowledgement that the diagnosis of primary PTH due to an adenoma was missed. I threw her several curved balls that she successfully batted away, and she generally took her time to fuss about my TSH, FT3 and FT4 which are now also looking a bit odd.

As she was unaware that I had progressed matters with FP, when I mentioned that perhaps I should have been seen in the PTH clinic at some point she did offer me a consult with Dr S there. But I know that the PTH Clinic is full (thank you, Lorraine!) and it would take months to get an appointment, so I declined this. She also offered to refer me to their "PTH surgeon" the ENT man ( affraid affraid affraid ) Mr Fish (aren't some people just so aptly named?!) which I also declined. I had a mind to ask her how many parathyroidectomies he had performed for them, but gave up when she tried to tell me that all his PTH patients were very satisfied with "how nice" he is. Aaaargh!

It just wasn't worth getting into a ruck about all this with her, as I shall have to see her again to monitor my hypothyroidism, but I did leave her a whole file of "bedtime reading" which I said would explain where I was coming from in my thinking (to use a nice pat NHS phrase).

We are still having to agree to disagree in our approaches to pHPT, and I will have to wait to re-educate her another time. My time will come though - and I will also ask FP to liaise with her from now on, as she is the only endo I have on-side (even though we are not on the same bloomin' side!!).

I needed a pile of cats when I got home cat cat cat cat cat cat cat cat and am presently lusting after the first glass of wine of the week. I think the subtlety of setting FP onto her might be more effective that bashing her over the head, although my inclination is to indulge in the latter rather than the former. I expect it will wear off in time....

Travelling to see friends by the sea on Saturday and to see the little grand-son on Sunday, so that will take my mind of it all.

I hope everyone's had a relatively good day and that your weekend is a sunny one. Thanks again for your support/love/hugs - it keeps me going.

Love from Tigerlily xxxx

Hi Tigerlily
Sorry you didn't get the satisfaction from the silly Endo she obviously has closed her mind to anything other than her opinion.
You are right it isn't worth burning your bridges if you need to be in contact with her re thyroid but setting FP on her will be a great alternative.
I'm going to use the "where I'm coming from in my thinking" from now on as long as I can remember where it is that I AM coming from.Smile
Have a lovely time with your friends and little Grandson.
I hope you have fulfilled your lusting sufficiently HicHic drunken
Lots of love Amanda xxxx:cat:cat

Have a great weekend away Tigerlily,
I think once they have their views and ideas firmly ensconced, not even wild horses can get them to change their minds.  I do wonder at times when they are supposed to have our best interests at heart, why it takes so long to get a diagnosis.  I can understand your views of not burning any bridges if you have to see her with regards to your thyroid in the future, I hope she can at least sort that for you.  Hope you get decent weather this w-e and have fun.
