Fingernails Empty Fingernails

Post by Lucie83 Wed Sep 17, 2014 12:33 pm

Hi All

This may seem a strange topic, but does anyone have horizont ridges on their nails? The moon shape near my cuticles also seem all different sizes. Just wondered if anyone else's nails were like that?

I had a quick look into this and there's many things your nails can say about your health - one of the cause of ridges was "Metabolic Distirbances"

Thanks
Lucie

I don't know Lucie though I have read about it somewhere that I thought was connected to hypo not hyperparathyroidism or hypocalcaemia. I could well be wrong, since my brain is mushy at the best of times  Rolling Eyes I'm sure someone else here will chip in much more knowledgeably soon.

Yep, and I also have vertical ridges too. I read about the link to metabolic disease but as I have thyroid disease as well as parathyroid, plus it looks as though I may also have adrenal insufficiency (but that's on a back burner for now until the PT is sorted - my cortisol levels were at the bottom of the normal range), I can't fathom out which to blame it on .......

Well there you go, I knew I'd be wrong. My mum just told me that vertical ridges were due to arsenic poisoning (though I don't think either of you are suffering from that!) or thyroid problems. It would be interesting to find out.

Hi

Mine are terribly noticeable but I notice them. It's only on my thumbs unless it's just the way my thumb nails grow and I am blaming everything on hormones!

I've got the vertical ridges, Lucie - very noticeable - one of my toes looks virtually corrugated!

Hope it's just the hypothyroid and not the arsenic!

Well, I don't have vertical ridges, but for many years my nails peeled and split very badly. As soon as they would try to grow, they would just peel and break right off. I hardly had any white tips at the end of them. The nails were always VERY short. People would always ask me if I chewed my nails, and I have NEVER chewed my nails! Since I increased my thyroid meds about a month ago, they are FINALLY growing!! They are still peeling, but they are growing and looking much better! I'm hoping the peeling will stop in time too.

Since I am hypothyroid, was hyperparathyroid, and an now dealing with adrenal insufficiency, I also have no idea what might be causing this problem. Maybe all 3? I know thyroid problems can greatly affect the nails, and mine are looking better now that we've got my levels up, so maybe this was the answer.
