Triglycerides and PTH disease
I was wondering about PTH disease and what it does to our blood fats.
I thought this was interesting.
I noticed some of the pictures of peoples faces looked less full after surgery.
Just wondering if it is from an improvement in triglycerides.

Re: Triglycerides and PTH disease
Hi Nancy
Interesting paper! I first had raised cholesterol around 12 years ago which, coincidentally, was when I first had raised Ca and PTH, but because they had both dipped back into normal range three months later pHPT was ruled out at that time. Even though my diet hasn't changed much over the years, and I do mostly eat healthily, my weight has increased (particularly around the abdomen) and my cholesterol has continued to rise in spite of ever increasing doses of a statin to try and bring it down, and adjustments to my diet. I was diagnosed with coronary heart disease two years ago. My face always seems to look puffy to me, especially around the eyes, so it would be nice to think that a successful surgery may improve all this. Thanks for posting the paper, Nancy.

Re: Triglycerides and PTH disease
In 2009, my triglyceride level was 89. In November of 2011 my level was 187. In March of 2013 it was 98. Seven and a half months later I had parathyroid surgery. Four months after surgery my level was 130. So, once again, my body makes no sense whatsoever!

Yes, I think Aud is a good name for me! I have a good friend who calls me Audball. I'm sure my health issues have something to do with that.

Jasmine,
It would be great to see what your triglycerides would drop to after surgery. After the "mystery" lump was removed in May, I lost weight around my waist and generally of the upper body without trying to.

Re: Triglycerides and PTH disease
Oh, Amen to that, Nancy! A reduction around the waist would be a great result from the operation!
I put on weight around the middle about 10-12 years ago and it has never shifted, no matter what I do. I thought it was the low thyroid function (which is also linked with high cholesterol) and that when I got that fixed the weight would drop, but it didn't. My theory is that the low thyroid function has been masking pHPT all these years - just like it said in the paper posted by Simon before he left the forum - and that the weight-retention and the high cholesterol (11 in UK units at the last count) are due to the pHPT.
I have resisted taking statins for some time now, because I didn't want to "muddy the waters" as far as symptoms are concerned - especially the "mental fog" ones, as I've read that mental fog can be a symptom of statin usage as well, and I had enough of that going on from the pHPT!
Great article, Nancy, and I'm pleased that you lost some weight after the operation.
So good to know!
