Vitamin D Results - Confusing! Empty Vitamin D Results - Confusing!

Post by Lucie83 Thu Feb 19, 2015 12:33 pm

Hi All,

I've just picked up my Vitamin D results from January and wanted your thoughts! I'll post the comments on the results too.

25 Hydroxyvitamin D3: 95 nmol/L (Range 50.0-150.0)
25 Hydroxyvitamin D2: <10 nmol/L - Vitamin D Sufficient. 25 OH Vitamin D2 will only be detectable if a patient is on 25 OH D2 replacement. Analysed at Homerton Hospital

No idea what the D2 results mean but are these the correct Vitamin D tests? Also posted the Jan PTH results.

PTH: 4.5 (Range 1.1-6.9 pmol/L)
Calcium: 2.40 (Range 2.2-2.6 mmol/L)
Corrected Calcium: 2.34 (Range 2.2-2.6 mmol/L)
Phosphate: 1.07 (Range 0.8-1.50 mmol/L)
Phosphatase: 45 (Range 35.0-105.0 iu/L)
Protein: 74 (Range 60-80 g/L)
Globulin: 27 (Range 20-37 g/L)

Thank you

Its only the D3 that matters and 95 is good. Your other results look pretty much perfect Smile

Is the PTH perhaps a little high given the corrected calcium level? To use one of Tigerlily's favourites, inappropriately unsuppressed? Everything else looks spot on though. I know the medics will probably say everything is within normal range and fine.

Hi Jasmine & Nelly

This is what confuses me. My understanding is that if my PTH Glands were working as they should, my CA & PTH would pretty much be the same each time tested, but they do fluctuate everytime?

Thanks

I think I'm right in saying that D3 is the kind from animal products and also what we create from sunshine, D2 is the kind from plants (which we can also use, it just requires another level of conversion.)

Like calcium they don't tend to measure the active form (1-25) but 25 cos it's longer lasting and a good measure of your vitamin D stores.

I'm guessing based on the figures you are taking vitamin D. For how long and how much do you take?

I agree the results are confusing but similar to mine in terms of bouncing around - sometimes looking normal, sometimes not, so I'm very interested in them. If I get to the bottom of it I will definitely let you know.

Love
Dee

Hi Dee,

I'm not taking anything for Vitamin D , is that a good or bad thing?

Thanks
Lucie

Since the type of vitamin D they measure lasts weeks in the body...did you go anywhere sunny in the months before the test? Or were you on vit D previously and come off it? Have you been taking fish oil tablets or anything else that might raise it?

If you're not on tablets and managing to maintain a good level yourself (95nmol/L) then I'd say that was a good thing.

The only frustration is it doesn't help explain your symptoms and since I'm in the same boat with a lack of definitive diagnosis, sometimes even good results don't help us move forward. On the plus side it may stop your Dr's from blaming secondsry HPT, which would be helpful.

Let us know what they say to you.

All the best,
Dee

Thanks Dee. Prior to the test I'd just indulged on Christmas food Very Happy or used Christmas as an excuse! Unfortunately no warm sunshine, just the rainy UK and nothing else.

FP did say to me once when I contacted him via email that sometimes having a low Vitamin D level can cause HPTH symptoms and it's best to monitor it but mine has always been good, another reason that makes me think my levels and symptoms are actually down to having an over active PTH Gland, who knows! Hopefully my docs will just do me a favour and check my levels regularly so I can rule it in or rule it out, that's all I want to know!

Thanks

I think that's your best bet, Lucie, to have regular Ca/PTH/Vit D tests, say, every 3-4 weeks if you can get your GP to agree to this.

I have a chart of all my results over 2 years that I'll try and post here. My results were very variable, but the signifier (that no-one else noticed - my goodness I'm getting bitter!) is that the serum calcium was high in its range at the same time as the PTH was high in its respective range (FP's expression - cheers Jasmine! - was that the PTH was "inappropriately unsuppressed" when the serum calcium was high in its range.

Keep us posted on what your medics say.

Love from Tigerlily xxxx
