Parathyroid weight gain after surgery

Hello everyone I am a new member, 18 months ago I had three parathyroid tumours removed.
Since the operation I have put on a lot of weight and cannot lose it. 
I live a healthy life and have a good diet
I am hoping that someone else has had this problem and have found a solution to losing the extra weight
and can advise me as all this extra weight is making me feel ill are there any of you going through this problem

Hi Crystal and welcome to the forum,

I don't think I have come across this post surgery problem before but the first thing that pops up in my head is a thyroid issue, have you been diagnosed as hypothyroid ?  weight gain is a very common symptom and the inability to lose it.

Quite a few of us already have under active thyroid and have found that post parathyroidectomy our levels are all over the place and it takes a long time to get back to our pre op levels.

Although doctors will probably tell you otherwise it appears to be quite common for both thyroid and parathyroid problems to go together. The symptoms of both are very similar so very difficult to tell which is causing the problem. Do you feel any better post op ? I didn't and 9 months on I still don't feel great, disappointing.

If you haven't had thyroid bloods done I would suggest that as a starting point, you need TSH, T4 and T3 done, if they come back normal then at least you can rule that out.

We are a bit quiet on here these days but hopefully someone will add their thoughts, if I come across any info that may help I will let you know.

Just to expand on Nelly's comment about Thyroid blood tests, most doctors and endocrinologists seem to have appallingly little in-depth understanding of hypothyroidism.

In my opinion, there is no such thing as 'normal' when it comes to Thyroid blood test results.
Everyone has their own range, but docs seem to believe that everyone is OK if bloods are anywhere within the range (thereby ignoring the symptoms, or blaming symptoms on something else).

Hi Nelly and Edwin for you help I have had the thyroid test TSH level  (cep5522 - normal
it was 3.52 mu/l guide is 0.38-4.70mu/l.
I am feeling unwell most days and have done so since my operation I really do not know
where to go from here it is a battle with the doctors as my condition was put down to
getting older and womans problems and stress.
I had to get another specialist who discovered that I had 3 parathyroid tumours which
had to be removed I am so pleased to have found this forum and are able to chat about
this as some days I feel quiet depressed with the whole situation I was expecting to feel
better not worse after the operation.

You really need a Free T4 and Free T3 level to see if they are below range.

Although 3.52 TSH is within the reference range, anything above 1.5 is likely to indicate hypothyroidism.

However, most doctors will not give you a hypothyroid diagnosis, as you are 'in-range/normal'.

Another member is going through the same thing and her doctors are refusing to listen.

It can be a real struggle to get the correct diagnosis.  Doc will try to tell you that you have depression and/or chronic fatigue, but these are typically symptoms of hypothyroidism, as is weight gain.
