Chances of more than one bad Parathyroid
I know this may be an unlikely scenario, but has anyone had a parathyroid adenoma removed and then to have another parathyroid go bad. Recently, I had an ultrasound and they found 3-4 nodules, mind you these were not there just a year ago when I had the parathyroidectomy. The radiologist thought that two of them looked like parathyroid adenomas and the other was a thyroid nodule. They did look different to my untrained eye in that the two was a dense white oval shape and the other was a black hole. They ordered a Sestamibi scan which was done at the local hospital in a small town. It was negative. I've read there's up to (I think) a 22% false negative rate with sestamibi scans and that could be due in part to the inexperience of the technicians who perform them in these smaller hospitals. I should of refused having it done there and had them refer me back to the place where I had the surgery done in St Louis. My throat is often sore and shirt collars feel snug, but I cant really feel any lumps on my throat. Anybody had anything similar to happen, but Id take any suggestions or opinions. Thanks!

Hi Jean and welcome to our forum.
There are some members who have had adenomas removed on more then one occasion.
Hopefully, someone will add their comments soon.

Re: Chances of more than one bad Parathyroid
Hi I just joined the forum. I have has 2 surgeries. 2 adenomas were taken out the first time and then 13 years later a 3rd one was taken out. So it does happen. Now I am concerned that my 4th one is enlarged. I will follow up with blood work. Good luck!

Hi Frankie
Have you looked at the possibility of the MEN syndrome? I think all 4 PTH glands can be affected by hyperplasia in MEN1.
I hope this is not the case for you, but it might be a useful avenue of research.
Let us know your blood results when you get them, and have a very Happy Christmas meantime.

Hi Tigerlily.,
Just got my blood test results. Calcium 9.4 PTH 141. What do you think?

Re: Chances of more than one bad Parathyroid
Hi Frankie
After surgery to remove what were described to me my by my surgeon as 3 hyperplastic glands (the remaining one looked normal) in December 2014, my serum calcium dropped back to about your level and my PTH stayed around the top of its range here in the UK.
Your calcium is good, but your PTH would be about twice the top of the normal range, if I have calculated it correctly.
It might be a good idea to try and get back to your last surgeon to see what he thinks about this, or perhaps to an endo who knows about parathyroid issues.
Is it possible for you to do that? Or if you got the recent testing done via your doctor, perhaps they would be able to give an opinion?
Another possibility is that an error was made at the lab, or the PTH was reported incorrectly. It happened to me!! So a re-test might be a good idea before anything else.
Let us know how things go from here.
