Hi,
I am, brand new to the board. I am a 64 yr old female. I have had 2 parathyroid surgeries. One in 1994 to remove 2 glands and one in 2007 that removed I gland. One left and I am feeling like that one is overactive now as well. Haven't had the PTH test yet. I am going to discuss this with my regular Dr. on Jan 3rd. My calcium last time tested was 9.6 I think which I know is not high. I am just going by how I have been feeling lately. Does anyone know if they would do a 3rd surgery on the same person?
Thanks!

Hi Frankie and welcome.

I'm assuming you are in the USA ? as your calcium result is not the usual range we have in the UK.

That's really bad luck if you are hyper again, I don't recall anyone on here who has had 3 ops and all glands removed, you may well be the first.

There may be difficulties with more neck surgery as the scar tissue complicates things but you probably already know that having had two ops, I think you will need a very experienced surgeon if another op is needed.

Hopefully your Dr will do the PTH test and get things moving if needs be, do let us know how you get on.

Take care
Nelly

Hi Frankie

Have a look at the pages of www.parathyroid.com as it's a US site that we here have found very useful.

It might be worthwhile you checking out the condition Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (MEN1 and MEN2). I hope that isn't affecting you, but it can be something that affects all 4 PTH glands.

One of our members, Jasmine, has had 3 surgeries on her neck, as I recall. The third surgery was taken very seriously by her endocrine surgeon and she had a number of tests before he agreed to the third surgery on the same area, because of difficulties with scar tissue and the possibility of damage to her laryngeal nerve. The surgery in London was successful, though, and she is a changed person now, living life to the full.

Let us know what your PTH level is if you can. At 9.6 your Calcium is about where it should be, but if the PTH is high, then you might well have another PTH problem.

Stay as well as you can over Christmas and New Year, and keep us posted on developments.

Best of Wishes, Tigerlily.
