Update from an old member ... Magnesium
Hi
I'm so sorry not to have been around for such a long time but really haven't been very good and wanted to be able to write an update that might explain why.
Some of you know that I had two surgeries and was finally cured of HPTH in January following surgery at Hammersmith with the lovely Mr Palazzo. All was well but I never really felt great afterwards and had many problems with low calcium so I was prescribed vitamin D... I posted about this back in June as it made me feel terrible. I ended up at A&E with racing heart, tingling, parathesia, anxiety and more
With no help coming from doctors I started checking on google and came across heaps of information about not taking high dose vitamin D without magnesium..... It's the magnesium stupid!!
With GP thinking I was nuts but desperately in need of help I saw a nutritionist and had some tests done by a private GP to confirm I had a pretty severe magnesium deficiency.
I don't know because I have been sorting it myself and would never tell other people what to do but it seems calcium and magnesium should be in equilibrium soooo could it be that our calcified bodies cause hypomagnesaemia??
Symptoms are as Jasmine stated in her post but many many more. Google it and see
It has taken me many months and a lot of patience and I'm not sorted yet but high dose and transdermal magnesium have made a difference and when I was in California last month I got too much sun and wham symptoms started getting worse again. I had avoided all vitamin D this summer. I visited a lovely health food shop in Santa Barbara ( how I wish I could live there) and the assistant said without hesitation," everybody knows you shouldn't take vitamin D without magnesium" I couldn't believe it. How can they know this but our doctors don't. Their shelves were bursting with magnesium products and you can get tested properly in US. Serum magnesium is apparently irrelevant as the body will take magnesium from the cells and bone where it is stored to keep serum levels (only 1% of body total) normal as our hearts depend on it. It is a vitally important mineral which it seems is neglected. I don't understand why this is so. Has anyone been checked or told to take supplements? I have found many articles relating low magnesium to low calcium. If I understand it calcium won't come up without magnesium. There is a lot of interesting reading out there about magnesium and it's many functions in the body. When I started taking it I felt worse which I now gather is quite common but using foot soaks helped a lot. How many of our granny's used Epsom salts ( I didn't realise it's magnesium). I would say here that I don't take any other medication but care is needed if you do.
Although I haven't posted for a while I have read your stories and been following your journeys. I hope those who had recent surgery are feeling better and will continue to catch up and pray for those still waiting. What a nightmare this whole thing is and how complicated are our bodies.
Information about magnesium is readily available on many US sites but not much in UK. My friends in France tell me they get prescribed magnesium for anxiety or when pregnant and in Germany it is also well known. Why not here???
Take good care
Lots of love and hugs

Re: Update from an old member ... Magnesium
Glad to hear you are improving at last Lynn, hope you continue to get better.
There is a lot of talk on the thyroid forum about Mag deficiency and many people take it and feel better, shame it is yet another thing we have to sort out for ourselves.
I'm on high dose calcium and Vitd and I don't think its doing me any good as today I feel really ill, I'm going to see what yesterdays blood test is then probably stop taking it. I dare not add anything new to the mix but will keep mag in mind if i don't get any better.

Re: Update from an old member ... Magnesium
Hi Nelly
I was catching up about you earlier and I had very similar problems post surgery. It took about two weeks to settle a bit but my calcium stayed at 2.1 until I took magnesium. It's now 2.34! What Mac the knife once said would be perfect! I think you are right though not to add things in too quickly. I also only ended up taking it out of desperation and was very worried at the time. Take good care love Lynn x
Ps a friend of mine who used to be an intensive care nurse but is now a vicar said to me on my darkest day. Take the Maggie it can't hurt you and do you know the difference between God and a Doctor? God knows he's not a doctor! Haha. Reminds me of a few I've met
