Parathyroid Scans
Morning All,
I have a Mibi on Thurs and Ultrasound next Tues, this may seem a silly question but how is an Ultrasound of the Parathyroid Glands any different to what they'd see on a Thyroid Ultrasound? I've had 2 Thyroid Ultrasounds and am I right in saying the Parathyroid Glands are at the back of the Thyroid?
Apologies if that sound silly, I'm just confused how they could see any PTH Glands on an Ultrasound?
Thank You

Re: Parathyroid Scans
Hi Lucie
I don't think they are on the back of thyroid (someone correct me if I'm wrong)
I think when they do US of parathyroids they look at them in a lot more detail than when a US on thyroid is performed. When I had mine he identified the thyroid and then went looking for the parathyroid the mibi had flagged up.
Hope this helps.

Re: Parathyroid Scans
When I had a ultra sound done it was for both thyroid and para's. I have thyroid nodule's so they would measure them, then she went looking for the bad para gland. I noticed she pressed really hard on both side of my neck then she went up really high in the neck and also as low as she could go till she hit the bones in the upper chest. US can't scan though bone. Also endo told me that on a US it is hard to tell the difference between a thyroid nodule and a adenoma. That is why they like to do mibi on the same day to compare. Good luck to you, keep in mind if the scans don't find it, it does NOT mean its not in there somewhere. Best wishes Lucie . Keep us posted.

Re: Parathyroid Scans
Thank you everyone. If I prepare myself for a disappointing result, maybe I'll be surprised but deep down I'm convinced it'll show nothing.
Thank you again xxxxxx

Yep, if they don't find anything, it doesn't mean a thing. Sorry for repeating myself, but I only had 1 scan. It was a mibi. It was done the morning of surgery. It was negative. A few minutes later, I had 2 tumors removed.
Good luck, Lucie!!

Re: Parathyroid Scans
Hi Lucie, I've got my mibi next week, looks like there's a LOT of hanging around. How long does each of the scans take? Is the injection a stinger? Any advice would be good please.

Hi Meggy
Different hospitals have there own way of doing the scans so your appt may differ.
I had 4 scans over 4 + hours, roughly one every hour, the longest two were 20 minutes each then two of 10 mins each. The injection is very small into a vein in your arm or hand, didn't feel a thing.
Good luck, hope it goes well.

Re: Parathyroid Scans
Hi Meggy
You're right, it's a lot of hanging around but mine didn't seem as bad as I thought. I had my injection at 10:10am, had to wait until 10:30am for first photos which took about 5 mins then went back at 1:15pm for the rest of the photos which took about 25 mins. There's nothing uncomfortable about the injection. I'd advise magazines/books/crosswords it even episodes of a show on your iphone, but more importantly a big cup of coffee
Hope all goes well.

There's a pub nearby, that might be more fun than coffee;-)
